The new elementary school on Athens-Boonesborough Road is almost complete. Principal Williams sent out a letter to the parents to future students.

“Dear BCE Family,
I wanted to take a moment to update you on our building’s progress.

josh williams, new principal at new elementary, smiling at the cameraWith more than half of the building al- ready complete, Brenda Cowan Elementary School will be ready to welcome students, families and staff on the first day of school on August 14, 2019. But since 2018 was Lexington’s all-time wettest year since 1870, there still may be some construction happening on campus.

Although contractors have been hard at work, it rained roughly six out of every 10 days last year, which had an impact on their progress. By the end of 2018, Fayette County had received at least 26 inches of rain more than usual over the course of the year.

When school starts in August, roughly 80% of the building will be ready for occupancy. The good news is we don’t need those other rooms to serve the number of students we’ll have our first year. (Remember that Brenda Cowan Elementary is being built for 750 students to accommodate future growth, but we only anticipate having 500 students our first year.)

In the picture to the right, you can see what areas will be complete. These spaces include the classrooms, resource rooms, kitchen, cafeteria, gymnasium, media center, support spaces, and administration areas. The exterior parking lot will be ready, as will the bus and car-rider drop off and pick-up areas.

The remaining classroom wing will be finished in September. Contractors will be working in areas D and E after school starts, but the wing is divided by doors, which will make it easy to separate the construction area from the students and staff. The work win not be noisy or impact instruction.

We’ll continue to Keep you updated on the progress of our building and look forward to hosting open houses this summer!

The next Community meeting is 5 to 8 p.m. at Crossroads Church in Andover, 4128 Todds Road on May 21.

Thank you for your continued support, Joshua A. Williams

Brenda Cowan Elementary”
