What’s Open, What’s Closed on Martin Luther King Day, 2016, in Lexington?

Most (but not all) local Lexington banks will be closed for the Martin Luther King Holiday. U.S. Post Offices will be closed for the Martin Luther King holiday. Most retail and groceries operate on a regular schedule for the Martin Luther King holiday.

On Monday, January 18, From 10 – 11 am, there will be rolling street closures for the Martin Luther King Jr. Parade from W Vine St and S Broadway, proceeding east to Main St and Midland Ave, then west on Main St and back to Heritage Hall. Streets will reopen as the march passes by and some traffic congestion is expected.

No classes at UK on Monday, January 18, in observance of the Holiday. Most University of Kentucky campus buses will not operate on Monday January 18, due to the Martin Luther King holiday.

Lexington Public Libraries are all closed on the Martin Luther King holiday. The post office is closed; no mail delivery for the holiday. Most banks downtown will be closed for the holiday.

Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government offices, as well as the Lexington Recycling Center, the city’s Electronic Recycling Center and the Haley Pike Waste Management facility will be closed on the holiday. Info, contact LexCall at 311 or (859) 425-2255.

LexTran buses are operating on a regular schedule on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Lexington’s Division of Waste Management will adjust its collection schedule for the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. Residents and businesses whose regular collection day is on Monday will receive their collection service on Wednesday, Jan. 20. Residents and businesses who normally receive Monday pick-ups should place their Herbies, Rosies and Lenny carts out after 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 19, to assure collection the next day. Businesses that have city waste management services for their dumpsters (landfill bound and recycling) and normally have pickups on Mondays will have their units picked up on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Businesses normally having pickups on Tuesdays will have their units picked up on Wednesday, Jan. 20.

MLK DAY AT A GLANCE

January 18, 2016

MLK Day in Lexington begins with the Annual Unity Breakfast at 6:30 am at the Lexington Convention Center. The purpose of the Unity breakfast is to commemorate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his ideals for peace and unity.

The Unity Breakfast is followed by the annual Freedom March in downtown Lexington at 10 am.

The March is followed by an address by this year’s keynote speaker, Danny Glover, at Heritage Hall at 11 a.m. Miss Kentucky Clark Davis and Cliff Jackson, associate professor of vocal coaching at UK Opera Theatre, will also join Glover on stage.
