Lexington Breaks Ground on Kelley Park

Lexington broke ground today on Kelley Park, which received initial funding for a Master Plan development process in Fall of 2023.

Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton said, “Today we broke ground on Fayette County’s first public river park. Kelley’s Landing is named for the late John Kelley. The City bought the property from the Kelley family in 2022. It will soon be a beautiful, 30-acre public park, allowing kayakers and canoeists to get into the river and travel 12 miles between locks. There will also be trails for hiking. The Fund for Greater Lexington is investing in the park through a master plan process, which will allow the community to contribute to the overall design of the park.”

Councilmember Kathy Plomin says,”The 30-acre park is located off of Old Richmond Rd, near the I-75 bridge in the 12th District. A master plan is being created for the park by Gresham Smith, thanks to The Fund for Greater Lexington. There will be an extensive community engagement process for residents to shape the future park.”

The park is expected to open this fall and will be Lexington’s first public river access.
The natural area park includes significant green space, wooded areas, river access, and picturesque views of the river. Since the city purchased the property in 2022, significant site preparation has been done to demolish unsafe buildings, and remove debris the river has washed ashore over the years.
