EASTER PROGRAMMING 2016

Easter Oratorio

Dr. Everett McCorvey presents local composer Angela Rice’s “Thy Will Be Done: An Easter Oratorio” in the UK Singletary Center on Sunday, March 13, at 4 pm. Performed by the Lexington Singers and soloists featuring Gregory Turay, the work is an iconic springtime choral and orchestral performance.

Thy Will Be Done: an Easter Oratorio was composed by Lexington’s Angela Rice. The work received national attention when it was selected to be part of the Music Reading Session at the 2013 Montreat Presbyterian Music Conference.

Since its debut during the 2012 season, Rice has expanded the work from a cantata of 16 musical numbers to an oratorio of 30 pieces about Jesus’ life, ministry, crucifixion, resurrection and impact.

“I’ve tried to use the music to depict the emotions of the characters in the specific biblical contexts,” said Rice. “I hope that as you listen you can hear the love, surrender, obedience, despair, humility and awe – emotions that the characters experienced.”

Stations of the Cross at the Farish Theater in the Central Library at 5:30pm. The Way of Sorrows: panel discussion with project artists and organizers. The Way of Sorrows is a multi-disciplinary artistic inquiry into the nature of human suffering based on the Stations of the Cross, a Christian devotional tradition dating to the 5th century. With stations located throughout downtown Lexington, the project cumulatively tells a story of human suffering, pain, injustice, and betrayal, punctuated with moments of mercy, forgiveness, and love. The effort was organized by a group of private citizens from Lexington’s art and religious communities, with each station offering a creative reflection by a local artist. Several artists and organizers will lead an informal discussion about the project.
