Friday, Nov. 4

The Senior Center at Charles Young Center  will host weekly “pickleball” games each Friday from 11 a.m. to noon. The next session will be held Friday, Nov. 4. Pickleball is a fun doubles game. Wednesday, Nov. 9

The AARP Smart Driver Course, offered by AARP Driver Safety, will be held Wednesday, Nov. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Bell House, 545 Sayre Avenue. This is the nation’s largest classroom and online driver safety course and is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. Learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today’s increasingly challenging driving environment. Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members, payable to AARP at the class.

Thursday, Nov. 10

Hearing Loss Association of America Lexington Chapter will be meeting Thursday, Nov. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Eastside Branch of the Lexington Public Library.

HLAALC  is a self-help organization dedicated to education, advocacy and support for people who do not hear well.  They offer emotional support, camaraderie, tips and techniques for living with hearing loss, and technical information about hearing assistance devices. The meetings are free and open to the public. Presentations are made by audiologists, doctors, professors, therapists, trainers, specialists, and others with hearing loss knowledge.  Real Time Captioning is used at the meetings. Friday, Nov. 18

The Kidney Health Alliance of Kentucky will celebrate its 30th anniversary Friday, Nov. 18, from 7 until 11 p.m., at the Grand Reserve Event Center. This year’s Trees of Life is a celebration of 30 years of Trees. The evening will include grown-up games, door prizes, good food, and lots of fun.

Dress is business casual, or wear your ugly Christmas sweater to enter a contest for the worst holiday sweater ever.

The event will include this year’s selection of beautifully decorated trees and voting for the People’s Choice Award. Trees will be for sale and a silent auction will help guests finish their holiday shopping early.

Entertainment will be by the fabulous Encore of Lexington, food by Bluegrass Catering and Bonefish Grill and other area restaurants.

The Kidney Health Alliance of Kentucky serves kidney disease patients and their families, increases awareness and early detection of chronic kidney disease, provides a network for collaboration among renal healthcare providers, and promotes organ donation. 100 percent of the funds raised at events like the Trees of Life is used to support the programs and services KHAKY offers in Kentucky.

Tuesday, Nov. 15

The Bell House Senior Citizens Center will host its 20th annual trip to Tennessee Nov. 15-18. The cost for the trip will be $400 per person/double occupancy; $450 per person/single occupancy. To participate in the trip, seniors must complete an individual registration form for 2016. It is important that trip organizers have the most current medical information on file for safety. The Lexington Senior Center’s annual outlet mall shopping trip to The Outlet Shoppes of the Bluegrass will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15.

The cost is $15 which includes van transportation and snacks. The van will depart the senior center at 9 a.m. and return at 4:15.

The University of Kentucky will host a senior resource fair on Friday, Nov. 18 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Hillary J. Boone Faculty Center, 500 Rose Street. This is an opportunity to meet with a variety of community agencies that provide valuable caregiving resources, tools, help and support and allow you to make the best care choice for both you and your loved one.
