Coach Jason Pack guided the varsity and the JV boys’ basketball teams from Edythe J. Hayes Middle School to championships in the 2020 countywide tournaments, which concluded March 5 at host Tates Creek High School. Hayes also earned this season’s award for highest team GPA.
In the eighth grade finals, Hayes edged Southern Middle 58-56 for the varsity title behind Leighton Harris’ 30 points. Leighton hit a huge 3-pointer to tie the game late in the fourth quarter and sealed the win by blocking a last-second attempt by Southern. Hayes also claimed the regular season championship in FCPS with an overall record of 9-1.
In JV action, the Hayes seventh graders defeated Bryan Station Middle 41-29 to cap the district’s tournament and their 10-0 regular season. Pack noted this team also won the silver bracket at the state tournament hosted by KBC and was runner-up in the 11th Region tournament.
