In early August Walmart will close one of its locations in Lexington, KY, located on Richmond Road and Man o’ War.

The Richmond Road Walmart is one of five locations in Lexington, KY. Three of those stores are Supercenters, located off Nicholasville Road, New Circle Road, and Sir Barton Way. There is also a Walmart Neighborhood Market on Saron Dr. off Tates Creek Road.

The Richmond Road and Man o’ War location was the first Walmart in Lexington, which opened in 1993. It is one of a handful of businesses located in the Mist Lake Plaza shopping center including Rent-A-Center, YouFit Gym, Game Stop, Hibbett Sports, and Gabe’s discount clothing store.

Anne Hatfield, a Walmart spokeswoman told the Herald Leader that 200 employees were informed of the closure on the morning of Wednesday, July 11. Employees were told they will be compensated through September 14 and have a chance to transfer to other Walmart or Sam’s Club stores. Hatfield continues to say the store closings are in response to performance and changing consumer habits.

The Richmond Road store, along with three in Louisville, are part of a string of Walmart closings. Stores in Arkansas, Illinois, and Texas are also set to close later in July.

The Walmart pharmacy will also close the same day as the store. Pharmacists are working with customers to transfer prescriptions to other locations. Merchandise will be discounted prior to the closing. So keep an eye out for those sales coming soon.
