Without a doubt, spay or neuter surgery is one of the best things you can do for your dog, cat, or bunny. This relatively simple procedure not only has multiple health benefits for pets, but it ensures pets will never accidentally contribute to the tragic homeless pet problem. Lexington Humane Society’s spay/neuter program, Spay’s The Way (STW), enables pet owners or caregivers to have their animals spayed or neutered for little or no cost, removing any economic reasons for not altering pets. With 19,000 surgeries completed in less than 9 years, STW has had a significant impact on the number of homeless litters in our community.
Again, while great progress has been made, LHS still needs your help. Here are a few key things you can do:
• If you feed it, fix it! It is estimated over half of all U.S. cat owners are “adopted” by a stray cat who shows up at their home. If this happens to you or someone you know, make sure this newfound friend is fixed. Call STW today to schedule your appointment!
• For “pit’s sake,” fix it! LHS loves their pit bulls, but there are simply too many entering into our shelter and not enough homes for them. This is unacceptable and unnecessary, especially since pit bull and pit mix surgeries are FREE at LHS!
• Continue to support LHS’s efforts. You can be proud of all they have accomplished, yet their work is nowhere near being finished. Consider supporting your local humane society’s adoption, spay/neuter, and education programs.
